Things are going great here at edgenetwork. We recently had a second machine installed to be our SQL Database server, to shift some of the load off the webserver onto it. It's comforting knowing there is now a total of 4 processors serving out edgenetwork day after day ;)
We're hosting quite the number of sites these days, many of which are quite popular. Based on statistics from the past few days alone, I would estimate an average 5.2 million 468x60 banner impressions per month. The bandwidth we use? Sure you want to know? Alright.. for the webserver alone we're looking at 20-30GB per day, that's nearly a terrabyte per month just in web traffic. I'm a little scared to finish off the FTP logstats app after that.
The actual number of 'pageviews', defined as a text/html content type served file, such as people's forums and alternate scripts etc, racks up to over 10 million per month!
Well our second server here at UUnet is also our fifth server. The webserver is our fourth. The third is over in Texas, hosted on RackShack's network. Our first and second servers are currently down, but should be returning in 2003 running gameservers and edgefiles. But you know what? We have a sixth server too, in Chicago, IL. Came online today, this will become our primary edgefiles server delivering up to and over 10mbps of file goodness.
So when the hell are we going to release some more sites? Yeah we're really taking our time with that aren't we. Just like the below news post from September 17th, we're all busy! Granted it was a rant at best, it still had some truth. Well we have a few sites with designs prepared for them that will come online either this month or Jan 2003.

Well I figured it was about time I put some kind of news update on this site to explain what's happening. Yeah, we relaunched in May with all these plans and a fancy new look. Now it's September and we have what.. nothing new :p
Before I go any further, this isn't a speech where at the end I say "oh yeah we're shutting down, bye". Nothing of that sort is happening, the network is doing great infact, the problem is quite frankly we don't care :) Ah it's about time I'm honest about that :)
The past few years we've had every struggle a network could have, from the fall of advertising to incredibly costly bandwidth usage, moving from server to server, but why? :p The gaming news/content community is GameSpy,
say what you want but hey they own it. It's like Unix vs Microsoft if you think about it. There's 100's of networks like edgenetwork around the place, thus the number of unix/linux/bsd flavors (just to summarize). Then there's GameSpy at the commercial throne, the Microsoft we all love, or hate, whatever.
Well that was a scarey rant now wasn't it. Well the point is, speaking on behalf of the edgenetwork founders, we're all doing our own thing away from edgenetwork. Some of us work, some of us at college, etc. So we don't have time, to put it simple. As a gaming news/content network we've never really been top notch. We've had some great sites, which eventually just fell out as the staff are always volunteers who also have school/work to attend to.
However, as a website host many will tell you we're one of the best, if not the best (for free hosting that is ;)). Really if you were to pick out a flaw, it's the fact we run popups to actually help pay for all this.
So the result of this news post? Well, for the time being we plan to continue providing our hosting service. The numbers that submit for hosting each day is rather scarey, and I always seem to feel bad for the sites we have to turn down for what seem like unfair reasons. But like we've said, we're not Geocities, we exclusively select sites to host.
And what's to come in the future? If us admins ever find free time again, we might just kick up a few new sites and hand complete control over them to chosen (and paid!) webmasters. So for now, we're not dead but don't expect any exciting website events for the remainder of this year. Well maybe if you're lucky.
One last thing, if you came here looking to be able to buy a gameserver, check out Super Computer Gaming, our most recent partners.
